Independent game developer shiftBacktick has recently released Periphery Synthetic, a metroidvania game, allowing players to explore a procedurally-generated planetary system using echolocation and terrain sonification, making it fully playable without visual input.

Periphery Synthetic’s accessibility features also include screen reader compatibility and the option to toggle off graphics for an audio-only experience. This makes it an exciting development for gamers who are blind or with low vision, who often face barriers in accessing and enjoying video games.

The game’s non-violent, exploration-based gameplay and interactive music elements also highlight a growing trend towards more relaxed and stress-free gaming experiences.
