The 40th CSUN Assistive Technology Conference is currently underway at the Anaheim Marriott, showcasing the latest innovations in assistive technology. This milestone anniversary marks four decades of advancing accessibility and inclusivity, and features exhibits, presentations, and networking opportunities with experts and innovators in the field.

Sony Corporation and Proto Inc. are among the exhibitors, highlighting their commitment to creating inclusive and accessible products.

Sony’s Accessibility Initiatives

Sony is exhibiting a range of products and initiatives that incorporate inclusive design. Their 4K Mini LED/OLED BRAVIA TVs feature accessibility options such as a menu timeout function, colour inversion, and grayscale modes. The LinkBuds Open truly wireless earbuds boast an open-ring design that keeps users connected to their surroundings.

Additionally, Sony is showcasing its self-fitting Over-the-Counter (OTC) hearing aids, (only available so far in the U.S. market). These hearing aids were developed in collaboration with WS Audiology and offer features such as Bluetooth compatibility and rechargeable batteries.

Sony is also introducing several innovative accessibility features in its digital cameras. A Screen Reader Function and Enlarge Screen Function will be incorporated into select digital cameras, allowing users to navigate menus and operation screens audibly and adjust the screen magnification with a simple button press. These features were developed in collaboration with a Sony employee who is blind and passionate about photography.

Furthermore, Sony’s Retina Projection Camera Kit (DSC-HX99 RNV kit) utilises laser retinal projection technology to project digital images directly onto the retina. This innovation enables individuals with difficulty using conventional viewfinders to capture and view the world.

In addition to these exhibits, Sony will also showcase accessible retail displays with Braille and audio product description capabilities. Created in cooperation with the Braille Institute, these displays have been installed in 925 Best Buy stores across the U.S.

Proto’s Hologram Technology

Proto Inc. is presenting its hologram technology, designed to enhance communication for the Deaf and hard of hearing. Their 3D platform enables life-size holographic projections that facilitate real-time, natural conversations without intermediaries.

Brittany Barry, Proto’s Business Development representative, will deliver a presentation on Thursday, March 13th, highlighting the benefits of Proto’s technology. Barry, who uses ASL to communicate daily, will demonstrate how Proto’s technology is bridging communication gaps and improving experiences in public spaces.

The CSUN Assistive Technology Conference runs from March 10th to 14th, offering a platform for innovators and experts to share their latest developments in assistive technology.
